23 year old female requesting more contour and shape to both her cheeks and chin. Dr. Slupchynskyj performed Chin Augmentation employing a small customized, anatomic Chin Implant. All implants used were custom made to this patient and her specific facial features.
The shape of the chin can affect someone’s entire facial structure, so a perfectly balanced chin can do wonders for creating a strong, attractive profile. A weak chin can ruin what could have been a perfectly proportional profile and throw the rest of your facial features off-balance. New York facial plastic surgeon Dr. Slupchynskyj offers both surgical and non-surgical procedures that can rebuild the chin, allowing you to restore harmony and symmetry to the face. With chin augmentation, Dr. Slupchynskyj can give you a permanently stronger, more attractive profile.
What is Chin Augmentation Surgery?
Chin Augmentation (also called “Mentoplasty”) is a procedure that adds bulk and shape to the chin. New York’s own Dr. Oleh Slupchynskyj reshapes the chin and surrounding jawline by adding a permanent implant that will be perfectly customized for each patient. In some instances of chin surgery, patients request that Dr. Slupchynskyj reduce the size of an over-prominent or very long chin, rather than re-establish a sunken or receding one.
To further perfect the results of the chin surgery, Dr. Slupchynskyj is often asked by his patients to combine this procedure with surgeries like Cheek Augmentation, Rhinoplasty or Liposuction of the neck.
Who is a Good Candidate for Chin Augmentation?
Any patient who wants to improve and strengthen the appearance of the chin and jawline is a good candidate for chin augmentation. Patients with a receding, smaller chin, or a chin that sits further back than their lower lip are excellent candidates. Patients with a normal dental bite, but who want to build a more prominent chin can still receive chin augmentation. Patients with a dental bite that is out of alignment (overbite, receding jaw, crooked bite, etc.) would need a more involved procedure to bring the lower face back into symmetry. Patients who need to resize an overly prominent chin can also benefit from chin augmentation. Dr. Slupchynskyj will thoroughly analyze your current chin and jaw structure and discuss the most appropriate and safest options to achieve facial proportion.
Surgical Techniques for Chin Augmentation
Dr. Slupchynskyj is known throughout New York for his breathtaking chin augmentation results. He uses various, advanced techniques to achieve his customized, natural-looking results. In some procedures, Dr. Slupchynskyj will make an incision inside the lip or, in cases that require a more prominent implant, he will make a tiny incision under the chin. In either instance, the incision will create a “pocket” between the bone and the overlying muscles and skin where he precisely places the implant.
Dr. Slupchynskyj can also review these other options for your procedure:
- Central Anatomic Chin Implant. A small implant is inserted near the center of the chin. This technique gives the face a more triangular look and brings the chin in front of the lower lip.
- Extended Anatomic Chin Implant. In addition to adding prominence to the chin, the extended implant adds shape to the jawline.
- Mild Square Jaw Chin Implant. This technique, employed primarily with male patients, results in a more authoritative and masculine appearance.
Chin Augmentation Implant Materials
Dr. Oleh Slupchynskyj will use different materials depending on the outcomes he wants to achieve. Although he’s used the patient’s own bone or fatty tissue as material to enhance the chin, Dr. Slupchynskyj mostly uses silicone-based implants, which he customizes by creating just the right contours on the implant needed to fill out the area. As with silicone breast implants, the material is soft and spongy, yet will stay in place with minimal effort and will not dissipate over time as may occur with a fat transfer. Silicone chin implants can also be relocated and removed easily should they need to be. Dr. Slupchynskyj does not use Medpor Implants due to the attendant risks and complications of this implant. Medpor, a porous, polyethylene-based plastic allows for tissue ingrowth, which can lead to various complications and infections, making removal extremely challenging without causing trauma to localized tissue.
Benefits of Chin Enhancement
A receding and small chin may convey the image, often unfairly, of a less than authoritative character. The primary benefit of Chin Augmentation is that it brings the chin and jawline into proportion with the rest of the face and gives the patient a stronger, more confident look. A Chin Augmentation can also reduce the signs of a “double chin” and a prominent nose, since chin size can affect perceived size of the nose making it either too large or too small for the face. Since this operation is often done at the same time as other cosmetic procedures, the final result can produce a harmonious overall appearance.
Chin Augmentation Surgery Recovery
Patients may experience pain or numbness in the area surrounding the incision, but these usually recede within a few hours to a few days. Swelling and bruising may also occur at the implant site for a short time after the surgery, but this should go away after a week. It’s highly recommended that patients avoid touching the implant for a few weeks up to a month after surgery. After 3-4 months, patients should be fully healed from the chin surgery.
